If it’s possible for me to love a book and still think it’s slightly overrated, that’s what I think. So then I wondered if anything considered “the best” intrinsically *must* be overrated. Then I thought of the Beatles, and no, that’s not a universal truth.
So yeah, I love it, but I think it’s slightly overrated. It has perhaps the greatest final few paragraphs, though. *sigh*
Would love for others to chime in.
☝️ That’s me answering a question a few years back. I need to correct myself on this: The Great Gatsby absolutely deserves it’s place among the greatest books of all time. I read Gatsby in my early 20s and thought it was very good, but I didn’t see the “big deal.” I read it again last month - and it’s an entirely different book. I can’t tell you how many things I missed that first time around. And the language… my God. If you highlight sentences just for the beauty of the language, you’ll highlight the hell out of Gatsby. But beyond that, there’s the tangible sadness that all of us are chasing something we’ll never quite reach.
Damn. What a book. Read it. And then read it again. I’m going to read it once a year for the rest of my life.
