The painting is an example of pointillism, a style of painting where small dots are applied in order to form an image.

Tumblr user viralthings was making a pun using the artist’s name and the painting technique. Tumblr user copperbadge added to the joke by making a reference to a 1984 Broadway musical based on the painting, Sunday in the Park with George.

WHOA THIS IS SO COOL my family has this painting against the backdrop of our dining room of our house in Texas, and as a child I never knew where it came from. It’s so cool to finally learn the name and artist of a painting that was always a constant in my childhood.
